It’s as quintessentially Christmassy as carols and mince pies. During the festive season, ballet companies all across America will be performing their take on Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet The Nutcracker.
If your family has yet to catch a performance of this Christmas classic, make this the year that you do! Anyone can find a Nutcracker performance be it on a professional or amateur level.
A quick history… a version called The Nutcracker and The Mouse King was first premiered on December 18, 1892, in St. Petersburg to limited popularity. However, the score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was a huge success. It brought us the classic song Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
The festive -favorite took off when world-renowned choreographer George Balachine choreographed a new version in 1954. Today it is one of the most famous ballets around – and a must for the holiday season.
A professional company performing The Nutcracker will leave you breathless and in ‘awe’ but will come with a more expensive ticket. If you are looking for something a little more budget-friendly, many studios do local versions of the show. For example, we have seen the San Diego Youth Ballet’s version of The Nutcracker for $15-$20, and it was wonderful!
At the end of the day, you can’t help but leave with holiday nostalgia after hearing that classic music, seeing children in adorable costumes, and being impressed by the leading dance soloists.

Since then, my daughter has been taking a Tiny Movers class for almost a year now (tap/ballet combo) and she absolutely loves it! Miss Amy is an AWESOME teacher! We’ve done a few makeup classes also and all the other teachers we encountered were so friendly, professional, and great with the kids. “My daughter is constantly playing ‘I’m Ms. Sara and you’re taking my dance class.’ She uses all the terms she has learned– passé, arabesque, heel-toe, etc. and leads her little sister, her dad and myself in a class, helping us out if we are doing a move incorrectly. Her teacher was absolutely wonderful! She is bright, sweet, encouraging yet strict. All the girls were having a great time! If you’re looking for a hard core competitive dance class for your child this is not for you but if you want something easy and fun then sign up! Prices are very reasonable too!”
