The Nutcracker: A holiday activity for kids

You won't get a ballet more magical than The Nutcracker

The holiday season is almost upon us once again! With the holiday season comes the amazing opportunity for some activities that the whole family will enjoy.

For us, no holiday season would be complete without catching a performance of The Nutcracker. In this holiday season, anyone can find a Nutcracker performance, be it on a professional or amateur level.

Either way, The Nutcracker embraces the spirit of the holiday season. It is an enchanting story of a little girl in a magical world with a Nutcracker, King Mouse, and dancing sugar plums. The scenery backdrops, costumes, and dancing are gorgeous. Meanwhile, the music will simply take you away.

The first version called The Nutcracker and The Mouse King premiered on December 18, 1892, in St. Petersburgh to limited popularity. However, the score within the ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was a huge success. It gave us the classic song Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The ballet really became famous when world-renowned choreographer George Balachine choreographed a new version in 1954.

In terms of showings, a professional company performing The Nutcracker will leave you breathless and in awe. However, it will come with a more expensive ticket. If you are looking for something a little more budget-friendly, many local dance studios stage versions of the show.

For example, we have seen the San Diego Youth Ballet’s version of The Nutcracker for $15-$20, and thought it was wonderful. At the end of the day, you can’t help but leave with that holiday nostalgia after hearing that classical music, seeing children in adorable costumes, and being impressed by the leading dance soloists.

10% DISCOUNT Semester Auto-Renewal Registration: (This option is only valid at the beginning of a semester as it is not prorated.) Dancers’ registration continues semester to semester until family requests to switch to monthly enrollment or to cancel. Cancellation notifications must be submitted to the EvOLvE office via email prior to the next semester as the credit card on file will be automatically charged prior to the next semester starting. Kid’s dance class cancellation requests cannot be submitted to teachers. NO REFUNDS after the payment has been processed.

Dance class cancellation requests cannot be submitted to teachers. NO REFUNDS after the payment has been processed. Billed monthly on the 28th of each month. Monthly charge will vary depending if it is a 3, 4 or 5-week month.

Registration Details for Kid's Dance Class

  • Although payment is organized in semesters or sessions, classes are designed to be progressive and ongoing throughout the year. Simply re-register session to session.
  • If paying at the front desk, credit cards, check or exact cash are accepted.
  • Please note that the City recreation center does not prorate if registering for the dance class late. Take advantage of our flexible make-up policy if you missed a class at the beginning of a session.
  • A dancer's spot in the dance class is only secured with payment as enrollment is first come, first served through the San Diego recreation center. No dancer can participate in a class without payment. You must re-register your dancer from session to session (or semester to semester) to secure their spot in the progressive dance class.
