Tap Dance gets its name from the tapping sound that is made when the small metal plates on a dancer’s shoe touches the hard floor. This defining factor makes the individual not only a dancer, but also a percussive musician. Here are some helpful hints for choosing the right dance class for your child in San Diego.

A Brief History of Tap Dance:

  • Developed during the evolving jazz era in the 19th Century in the United States
  • Tap dancing has a number of influences - two of the most prominent are Irish step dancing and African “juba” dance, which were brought over through immigration and slavery
  • In the mid 19th Century, vaudeville shows popularized tap dancing as a form of comedy
  • Tap dance reached its peak during the 1930s and 40s, then people lost interest
  • Interest was piqued again in 1989 with the film Tap, and has been steadily growing since
